As brown diamonds, such as those seen in a stunning cognac diamond ring, have become increasingly popular so has our appreciation for these natural colored beauties. They magically feel classic and timeless yet contemporary all at the same time. While they are enjoying their time in the limelight right now, it is easy to see these natural colored diamonds retaining their popularity well into the future.

Even though they are becoming more popular you likely haven’t seen them in person on many people so they still seem unique, which gives them even more appeal. As if their natural beauty and enticing names like champagne diamond, cognac diamond or chocolate diamond haven’t made them appealing enough.

What Is A Cognac Diamond?

The cognac diamond is part of the brown diamond family. All fancy color diamonds are graded and labeled based on their color and their intensity of color. First the color is identified then the intensity of the color. The more intense the color in the natural colored diamond the more valuable it is.

Cognac diamonds are deeper and more rare than the lighter colored champagne diamonds so they are generally considered more valuable. The color of a cognac diamond is often described as a green/orange/yellow brown. While this may sound a little strange, when you see one you can see the flecks or hues of green, orange and or yellow even though the core color is brown.

Most of these brown diamonds are mined at the Argyle Diamond Mine in the Western part of Australia. On the color grading scale devised by Argyle, cognac diamonds sit in the most valuable position as the deepest and richest of the brown diamonds, with light champagne diamonds on the other end of the scale.

Argyle mines so many champagne and cognac diamonds they’ve created their own grading scale to help categorize the various shades of their brown diamonds. However it is important to know the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) doesn’t necessarily recognize this grading scale.

Cognac Diamond Ring

Like the chocolate diamond ring you can find cognac diamond rings in a variety of cuts from a princess, emerald, brilliant or even a rough cut for a more natural, earthy look. These stunning gems go well with either gold or white gold. They are gorgeous on their own or accented with white diamonds, or even as an accent to a white diamond.

While champagne diamond jewelry may have more sparkle, the rich, earthy tones of the cognac diamond make it a perfect centerpiece for a ring, necklace or earrings. A cognac diamond ring is an especially fitting way to showcase this fancy colored diamond. Whether you choose the form of a solitaire cognac diamond ring or cognac diamond accented with white diamonds you are sure to catch some lingering looks with this exotic, rich brown diamond.
